Hi! Our world is evolving at a very fast pace, and we sometimes find ourselves in various situations that can affect our mental health. There is a significant increase in the number of individuals seeking help for mental health issues. A report put together by William A. Haseltine shows that depression rates amongst youth have risen from 12.9% at pre-pandemic, to 25.2% in 2021 alone. This makes it clear that mental health is an issue that deserves more attention and awareness than it currently receives.

In this article, we will discuss the concept of mental health, the factors that influence it, and the various ways we can promote and preserve our mental well-being. We will also further understand preventive measures, the role of professionals in the field, and ways to raise awareness about this critical issue. By the end of this article, we hope to have a basic knowledge of the importance of mental health in our society and assess how we can all contribute to better mental health for ourselves and our community at large.

Definition of Mental Health:

To discuss mental health, we first have to get a basic understanding of what it is.

So what is Mental Health?

Mental health is the complete composition of an individual’s emotional, psychological and social well-being. Which is a collection of thoughts, feelings and behaviour that together shapes one’s overall mental state that influences relationship cultivation, work productivity and decision making.

Good mental health doesn’t equal the absence of mental illness; no, it only means we have the ability to cope with life’s challenges, maintain healthy relationships, work productively, and make sound decisions. It is important to note that mental health is not a fixed state; it’s a dynamic concept that can change over time as it’s influenced by various factors which can be internal, external or both, and exists on a scale that ranges from excellent mental health to mental illness. Understanding this scale and pattern is crucial for recognizing the importance of preserving and promoting good mental health.

The Range of Mental Health:

Here, we’ll educate and understand the wide range of mental states an individual may experience.

1. Optimal Mental Health: At the forefront of the scale is optimal mental health, where individuals experience a sense of well-being, resilience, and emotional stability. They can handle life’s challenges effectively and maintain positive relationships.

2. Normal Variations: In the middle of the scale are normal variations in mental health. People in this range may experience occasional stress, anxiety, or mild mood fluctuations (mood swings). These variations are a natural part of life and don’t necessarily indicate a mental health problem.

3. Mental Health Struggles: Further along down the scale, some individuals face ongoing challenges with their mental health. This may involve conditions like depression, anxiety disorders, or substance abuse issues. Cases like this can be treated, with such patients living fulfilling lives, with appropriate treatment and support.

4. Severe Mental Illness: At the other end, we have individuals with severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. These conditions can significantly affect daily activities and behavior, requiring specialized care and treatment.

Factors Influencing Mental Health:

Here are some key influencers:

1. Biological Factors: Our genetics and brain chemistry play a significant role in mental health. A family history of mental illness or imbalances in neurotransmitters can increase the risk of mental health issues.

2. Life Experiences: Traumatic events, such as childhood abuse, accidents, or the loss of a loved one, can have an impact on mental health.

3. Social and Environmental Factors: Our social environment, including relationships with family and friends, workplace stress, and socioeconomic conditions, can affect mental health. Social isolation and discrimination can be injurious to mental health.

4. Healthy Habits: Lifestyle choices, such as the food we eat and when, exercises we engage in, and substance use, play a great role in mental health. A healthy lifestyle can promote well-being, while poor lifestyle choices can lead to mental health problems.

5. Access to Care: The availability of mental health services where individuals can find as a safe space to seek help is a crucial factor. Stigma around mental health can prevent people from seeking the care they need.

Mental Health Awareness:

Stigma is one of the biggest problems to why individuals find it hard to express themselves without being seen differently. This is where awareness plays a vital role in educating the populace about mental health and how we can have open conversations and find solutions. Here are some ways to enhance mental awareness:

1. Education: Social organizations, both government and non-government such as schools, religious bodies, etc., can organize workshops in various communities, holding educational programs that teach people about mental health, including recognizing signs of distress and where to seek help.

2. Media and Advocacy: Celebrities and public figures who speak openly about their mental health experiences can help reduce stigma. Advocacy groups play a crucial role in raising awareness and influencing public policy.

3. Open Conversations: Having open and non-judgmental discussions about mental health among friends and family. Sharing personal experiences can create understanding and empathy for individuals.

Preventive Measures:

As the saying goes “prevention is better than cure”, and this holds true for mental health as well. Here are some preventive measures to consider:

1. Self-Care: Get enough sleep, eat well, exercise, manage stress, and manage your time. Self-care is not selfish and should be prioritized as it’s essential for mental well-being.

2. Healthy Relationships: Maintain positive relationships and seek support when needed. Healthy connections with others can act as a protective factor for mental health improvement.

3. Set Realistic Goals: Unrealistic expectations can lead to stress and disappointment. Set achievable goals, and break larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps.

4. Manage Stress: Learn stress management techniques such as deep breathing, mindfulness, and meditation. These practices can help you handle life’s challenges more effectively.

5. Avoid Substance Abuse: Substance abuse can lead to mental health issues.

The Role of Professionals:

While preventive measures can be highly effective, there are times when professional help is essential. Mental health professionals, such as therapists, counselors, psychiatrists, and social workers, play a crucial role in supporting individuals who are struggling with their mental health. Here’s how they can help:

1. Assessment and Diagnosis: Professionals can assess and diagnose mental health conditions, providing clarity and guidance for treatment.

2. Therapeutic Support: Therapy is a safe space for individuals to explore their thoughts and express emotions, learn coping strategies, and build resilience.

3. Medication Management: In some cases, medication may be recommended to manage symptoms of mental illness. Psychiatrists can provide guidance and prescriptions when necessary.

4. Crisis Intervention: Mental health professionals can assist during times of crisis, providing immediate support to prevent harm and ensure safety.

5. Support for Families: Families and loved ones of individuals with mental health conditions often need support and education to understand and cope with the challenges they may face.

Acknowledging the fact that mental health exists in the society we live in and is influenced by various factors that can be within our control or sometimes we might sometimes require help and support from friends, family members, or mental health professionals is essential. Also, educating society in promoting awareness, protective measures to mental health, and how support can be provided to those struggling with mental health problems in our communities.

We can all work to build a world where mental health is recognized and taken seriously, the stigmatization of mental health individuals reduced, and access to care and support centers. These steps will not only improve our individual mental well-being but also create a society that is more mental health friendly, accommodative, and supportive. post
